3rd Grade Homeschooling

Third Grade will have all of the same things as 2nd and 1st Grades...but will be adding Latin, more comprehensive Music and Art programs, and Piano lessons. Again, all of these are using The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer as a general template.

Reading
Late Renaissance works (1600-1850)...which will include Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, poems by Tennyson, Wordsworth, and Blake, excerpts from Grimm's Fairy Tales, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, etc. The complete Reading Schedule list is on p. 79 of my copy of TWTM.

We'll also have plenty of library books for fun reading. Right now, my children are into Goosebumps, Nancy Clancy, and Junie B. Jones books.

Writing
Narrations/dictations made up by me...but modeled after Writing With Ease by Susan Wise Bauer for Third Grade.

I will also be working on having them write in cursive more...though I don't have a specific plan with that. My eldest picked it up fairly well without me having to invest in a program, so I'm hoping to get by without it. I'll just watch them closely at first and make sure they form things correctly.

We will also write a biography or book report (their choice) about any person/book they choose once every 6 weeks.

Math
Saxon Math 3
As with Math 1 & 2, we won't do all of everything suggested every day. In fact, for this year, I didn't even buy the Meeting Book.

History
Story of the World, Vol. III (1600-1850) by Susan Wise Bauer
I'm making up my own questions instead of buying the workbooks....and have scanned the pictures/maps for supplemental materials. We also supplement with books from the library and our Encyclopedia of World History (http://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Encyclopedia-World-History/dp/0794528333/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1436668840&sr=8-3&keywords=encyclopedia+of+world+history).

Scientific Farming

1. How have the universal laws of Newton and Locke affected the everyday farmer?

2. Who came up with the plant rotation for more crop yield?

3. What crops did Townshend find would return minerals to the soil?

4. What had changed about sheep farming from when William Barkley’s grandfather had kept them?

5. What was the Act that was passed to divide up the common fields?

6. Who invented the seed drill?

7. Summarize the passage. 

Science
Third Grade is Chemistry for TWTM, so we'll be doing 2 experiments/week from the Adventures with Atoms and Molecules series by Robert Mebane.

Latin
We'll be using Prima Latina by Modern Curriculum Press...and moving on to Latina Christiana I if we move through it more quickly than I'm anticipating.

Music
I got a description of the various musical periods during 1600-1850 (Baroque, Classical, etc.) from the internet and also have several musicians from that time listed to either learn about and/or listen to works from them (most likely using youtube for the music).

Art
Same as the music, have information concerning the artistic styles from 1600-1850 and have artists listed to look at their works and/or learn about.

Piano
I'll be using Alfred's Basic All-in-One Course to teach the children piano basics. It's supposed to cover theory, rhythm, solo work, everything.
